Nurturing Unity as One Family in Christ

Groveton Baptist Church family,

We have spent the first four months of 2017 exploring in Ephesians what it looks like to be One Family in Christ. This summer, we have some fresh, practical opportunities to experience increased unity.

Worship Together

On June 25th, we will all worship together at the 11 AM service. That Sunday will be unique, as we will be hosting more than 125 Mission Serve students for the week. About 20 of the students will be in the worship service with us, and the student praise band will lead the worship in song that morning.

Continuing on for the month of July, we will all worship together at the 11 AM service. Typically the choir is off during the summer, so our praise band will come alongside Dallis and Deborah to lead us in both classic, faith-building hymns and newer songs of praise. I believe, with God’s help, this will be a powerful, unifying time of worship together. The 8:30 AM service is often characterized by a freedom to worship expressively and passionately. The 11 AM service is rooted in hymns that Christ’s followers have sung for generations. We need both, and I am eager to have everyone worshipping together.

Our Adult Bible Fellowships and Sunday School classes will continue to meet from 9:45 - 10:45 AM and we will return to two services on August 6th.

Eat Together

Each of these Sundays, we will share a meal together. On June 25th we will have coffee and doughnuts with some of the Mission Serve students who will be staying in our building. This will give us an opportunity to get to know them and pray for them as they prepare to lead day camps in our neighborhood where they can show and share the love of Jesus.

Then, each Sunday in July, we will have breakfast together from 8:30 – 9 AM in East Hall, giving us an opportunity to eat and talk about what God is doing in our lives. Breaking bread together has always been a way for God’s people to nurture unity, and we hope you will join us for breakfast each Sunday morning in July.

Pray Together

After we eat breakfast together each week, we will pray together. This is the aspect of our schedule that excites me most. God has been calling us to increased prayer together, and this affords us such an opportunity. We want to seek God, pleading with him to make his presence powerfully known during our worship time, to unite our church family in faith, hope, and love, to provide for the physical and spiritual needs in our church, to direct us in how best to reach our neighbors with the gospel, and to save our family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers who do not know Christ.

Even if you cannot make it in time for food from 8:30 – 9 AM, let me encourage everyone to join us for prayer in East Hall at 9 AM on June 25th and throughout July. My prayer is that, as we set aside time to seek God together, he would unify and revive our hearts.

Brothers and sisters, I am very excited about this summer and the opportunities we have to experience life together as One Family in Christ! I recognize that I am asking you to come to church for a longer period of time from June 25th through the end of July. But I believe God can use this strategic time to draw us closer to him and closer to one another, for the good of our community and the glory of his name.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and please pray with me that God will strengthen and grow his church during this time.

Pastor Chris
